| DataLase Granted Prestigious R&D 100 Award for DataLase® CASEMARK™ Flexo |

DataLase, originator of the award winning DataLase® process, announces that its DataLase® CASEMARK™ Flexo imaging solution for secondary packaging has been recognized as one of the 100 most technologically significant new products of 2007 in the 45th annual R&D 100 Awards. Over the years, the R&D 100 Awards have recognized winning products with such household names as the fax machine (1975), the printer (1986) and the Kodak Photo CD (1991). DataLase CASEMARK Flexo offers unique benefits over conventional high resolution ink jet and thermal print and apply technologies by providing precise variable information applications in a number of sectors including pharmaceutical, food and beverage and product security.
The R&D 100 Awards are presented to products that exhibit superiority to existing technology as well as providing simple solutions to complex or long-standing technical or practical problems. In addition to imaging variable information, DataLase CASEMARK Flexo is the only system capable of delivering consistently high resolution, verifiable bar codes on-line-and-direct-to-carton, thus enabling them to be machine read virtually every time. With inkjet, the ink would “bleed” on the highly absorbent corrugated material rendering the bar code unreadable by machines and resulting in the retailer fining the manufacturers and charging them for return of the goods.
DataLase CASEMARK Flexo is a very cost-effective solution capable of achieving substantial cost savings of around 30-50% for a medium volume line with an investment payback time of less than a year. Requiring no inks, ribbons, or applicators and eliminating physical induced thermal print head wear due to non-contact imaging, the system is virtually maintenance free and achieves almost 100% production uptime. DataLase® CASEMARK™ is the only solution to allow for late pack customization to take place at any point in the packaging line and even within the retail chain, whereas traditional methods would require the production line to stop, the packs replaced and the packaging production process restarted, thus jeopardizing efficiency and losing valuable time.
DataLase® CASEMARK™ uses a low-powered laser, providing significant cost and energy savings compared to powering a standard printing laser. The solution is completely environmentally friendly due to eliminating label waste from the production process and aiding compliance with the relevant regulations. Furthermore, images produced are integral to the substrate and therefore entirely tamper-proof even on exposure to solvents.
